Minutes ago, while I was reading the New York Times online, this banner flashed at the top of my screen:
Only in a thoroughly sexist world could “grew to resent being overshadowed by him” be part of the first line of a woman’s death announcement. Only in a world that normalizes sexist attitudes could a liberal newspaper like the New York Times think this is appropriate.
I hope in the days to come we will have articles and obits describing her heroic struggle and accomplishments in fighting South African apartheid.
But for now, it’s important to note the disrespectful way her death has been reported by a major, national newspaper.
You’re right about this once again Gay. If the headline of Stedman Graham’s would-be obituary read “Educator, author, businessman Stedman Graham died today, and was successful in his own right but grew to resent being overshadowed by his wife” we would immediately think this was crass. Somehow if the genders are reversed it seems acceptable. Another example of sexism.
